This week, we were asked to research and chose a photo essay in preparation for our final project. I chose "Journey in the Death Boat" by Güliz Vural. She boarded a refugee dinghy to take photographs of people going from Turkey to Greece for a better life. I chose this essay since I think the story behind it is fascinating, and you can see the peoples faces go from terror to joy as they safely make it to the Greek coast. The use of colour is really interesting, despite the terrifying situation, the orange of the lifejackets and the blue of the sky are really strong. I also really admire the things Vural sacrificed to make this photo essay. She was detained for 5 days and fined 10,000 euros for crossing the border illegally, however I believe her work is so important in highlighting the struggles immigrants face before, during and after escaping their home country.
